Resource Scheduling Utilization

I am running into a problem while working with resource scheduling and after many hours of scouring forums and Youtube I have decided to post the question here. Chances are I am searching the wrong terms in Google and various forum search functions so I apologize if I was unable to locate the answer.

My question is as follows

I have a resource who is going to be able to work 50% of his time a week, 20 hours, on a particular project.

I have a task with a duration of 3 days to get the work done. I estimate that it will take 6 hours to get the work done due to various external constraints in those 3 days.

I assign the resource to the task and project assumes that he will be working 50% of every day during the task duration and calculate 12 hours of work.

When I manually change the number of hours in the work column to 6 it changes the duration of the task.

How do I get the duration to remain static when I change work hours for a resource?

I am simply trying to get project to notify me when I assign this resource to more than his 20 hours a week while entering custom work hours but maintaining the duration I have already outlined for the task.

Is this even possible?
